Description:

South Pacific, Hawaiian Islands, ca. early 20th century CE. A lovely calabash bowl of a deep form, hand-carved from finely grained milo wood. The vessel sits upon a lightly rounded but stable base and has tapered walls, a thick rim, and a sloped basin. Hawaiian royalty often valued specific calabashes - even going so far back as to name them after royal individuals - and until the early 19th century were reserved for members of elite classes and families. Prior to the 19th century, they were most commonly made from kou, milo, and kamani woods using stone and coral tools. Size: 5.4" W x 3.375" H (13.7 cm x 8.6 cm).
