Description:

Polynesia, Hawaiian Islands, Maui, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A beautifully aged gourd drum, known as an "ipu heke 'ole", made from a single gourd hollowed, dried, polished with sand, and cut across its top to create a musical instrument. The ipu gourd is an important part of the Hawaiian diet and as a result Hawaiians created a ceremony around its planting. To play this gourd, one would hold it at its thin neck and strike the lower sides with the fingertips or base of the thumb. It would accompany Hawaiians dancing the hula.
