**First Time At Auction**

Latin America, Guatemala, ca. early 20th century CE. A hand-carved and hand-painted expressive mask depicting a mustachioed, white faced individual with openwork round eyes for the wearer highlighted in red pigment, black painted arched brows with traces of green pigment above, a protruding straight nose, a long downturned black mustache with traces of green paint above red lips, and a marvelously jutting chin with shells affixed to it. In addition, separately carved elongated curved ears emerge from the face. Size: 10.375" L x 8.125" W (26.4 cm x 20.6 cm)

Masks have played a prominent role in the Maya culture for thousands of years. They were associated with transformation since the earliest times. In colonial Guatemala, face masks continued to be inspiration for dancers who imitated the characters portrayed with animated gestures and sounds during masquerades.
