Central America, Guatemala, ca. early 20th century CE. A hand-carved and hand-painted festival mask depicting a bearded, white-faced male, possibly to represent the European presence during the colonial period. The expressive visage is comprised of wide open, lashed eyes, with eye slits above for the wearer to see through, arched brows, a prominent nose, slightly-parted lips, and naturalistic ears - all framed by a nicely delineated wavy coiffure and neatly-manicured beard. Great patina on verso from use. Size: 6.625" W x 7.875" H (16.8 cm x 20 cm)

Provenance: Ex-Adeon Gallery, Chicago, IL, acquired prior to 1970.
