Description:

Latin America, Central America, Guatemala, ca. early 20th century CE. An attractive, hand-carved wooden mask in the shape of a bull head. The expressive mask presents with a thick tongue licking one nostril of the bulbous snout, almond-shaped eyes, broad cheeks, a wrinkled forehead, and massive horns that taper to a point. Layers of yellow, red, and black pigment decorate the face and mouth, and the horns bear a red-and-black color scheme. Zoomorphic masks like this example have long been used in La Diablada or Danza de los Diablos (Dance of the Devils) in Guatemala as animals have been regarded as sacred in Uru mythology, the main source of symbolism for the Diablada. Lucite display stand for photography purposes only. Size: 12.7" W x 8.75" H (32.3 cm x 22.2 cm).
