Description:

West Africa, Ghana, Fante people, ca. early 20th century CE. An Akua'ba, a female figure made of carved light wood. The figure stands on two legs with highly stylized features, including a rectangular torso with triangular breasts, ringed neck, a rectangular face with elongated nose, and curved horns atop the head. This curved horn hairstyle was popular during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, helping us date the figure. Akua'ba were created to pray for children, and they are often female figures because of the Fante reverence for women's procreative powers. Size: 1.7" W x 10.75" H (4.3 cm x 27.3 cm); 11.6" H (29.5 cm) on included custom stand.
