Description:

Western / Central Europe, Germany, Charlottenburg-Berlin, ca. early 20th century CE, made by Verch & Flothow. A fine costume hat of a priestly style formed from rigid cardboard panels that are lined with red and blue fabric. The front of the conical hat features a tall triangular panel lined with adhesive to hold a decorated adornment, and a thin cloth panel is sewn to the underside for a more comfortable wear. A stamp on the interior cloth, though faded, reads that this hat was made by the Verch & Flothow company of Charlottenburg-Berlin. Founded by Leopold Verch in the late 19th century, Verch & Flothow was one of the most important designers and distributors of theatrical costumes and equipment in early German cinema.
