Central Asia, Nepal, ca. early 20th century CE. Made from a carved Ganoderma mushroom, a species that grows on wood, this mask was made by the Rai indigenous people. The nose is another mushroom attached to the face. The mask was thought to cure the sick, worn during ritual performances, and kept in the rafters of village huts to ward off evil spirits. Size: 9.6" W x 5.4" H (24.4 cm x 13.7 cm)
