Description:

Oceania, Polynesia, Fiji Islands, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. An elegant walking cane, hand-carved from coffee-hued hardwood, with a knob handle, a quartet of projecting shoulder prongs, and a gently tapering body. Recessed cavities along the shoulder are decorated with X-shaped, zigzag, triangular, and circular fragments of nacre on a ground of thick earthen material, and the top of the knob-shaped handle boasts an inlaid nacre disc. A lovely cane covered in lustrous patina. Size: 1.7" W x 38" H (4.3 cm x 96.5 cm).

Provenance: private Southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s
