Description:

Horn of Africa, Ethiopia, Amarro peoples, ca. first half of the 20th century CE. A large decorative shield made from the hide of either a hippopotamus or buffalo. The circular shield has a flared exterior rim, a semicircular leather handle knotted onto the concave verso, a prominent raised central ridge, and thirty raised lumps around the raised boss. Horse-riding warriors of the Amarro people would wield lengthy spears while holding these shields for protection against opposing forces. Size: 24.25" W x 22.5" H (61.6 cm x 57.2 cm).
