Description:

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, West Kalimantan, Borneo Island, Dayak, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden female figure, often referred to as a hampatong (also called a hempatong, tempatong, kepatong, or epatung) which acted as a guardian or territory marker. This woman was carved in a characteristically stylized form with a rigid standing pose on an integral platform, a skirt covering her waist, bare breasts, and elongated arms bent at the elbows. The large head is rounded and smooth with protruding ears, a wide nose, pursed lips, and small eyes. The word Hampatong comes from the Dayak word patong which means statue. Most Hampatong figures portray ancestors and supernatural guardians from the Dayak religious system. Each one has its own specific meaning and purpose, and this is a wonderful example of the form. Size: 3.25" W x 15" H (8.3 cm x 38.1 cm)
