Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Indonesia, Borneo, Central Kalimantan, Mahakam River, Dayak peoples, Bahau group, item is a found, naturally occurring object but use by humans dates to early 20th century CE. A found object, a fascinating mineral deposit studded with quartz crystals and veins of quartzite. A member of the Bahau - a subgroup of the Dayak peoples - found it, extracted it from a cave, and brought it to a village, where it was revered as a local animist spirit. The form of the stone in some ways suggests a seated human figure with a haunting, skull-like face. The Dayak believe that objects like this one, when found, must be moved to the home and honored.
