Description:

East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A carving of a mother monkey holding her baby made from a mottled red and tan stone, likely albitite. Interestingly the base is signed and dated, "AAK / Greece / 20 Janou / 1918," and an indiscernible cursive possibly Greek word is etched vertically next to the initials. Perhaps this was engraved by the owner on January 20th, 1918, but the meaning is unclear. The style of the carving is definitively Chinese, and monkeys are an auspicious animal and appear as symbols of longevity. Size: 2.3" L x 2.2" W x 2.75" H (5.8 cm x 5.6 cm x 7 cm)
