Western Africa, Cameroon, Matakam/Kirdi people, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A "clam shell" iron apron made for a mature woman to indicate her married and thus elevated status in society. It is made of iron strips fastened with iron panels at top and bottom with a large loop at the top for attachment to a belt. The Matakam/Kirdi people are known for their "cache sexes", iron adornments that cover the genitals, as well as iron necklaces and bracelets. Today beaded aprons have replaced the traditional iron ones. Size: 6.45" W x 8.55" H (16.4 cm x 21.7 cm)
