Description:

Southeast Asia, Burma / Myanmar, ca. 1900 CE. An impressive talisman, finely carved from tawny beige soapstone, representing an expressive Yak (protector) figure that resembles an ogre or transforming shaman. The figure sits with both hands holding ritual implements and/or musical instruments resting upon his upraised knees. His visage is quite expressive bordering on ferocious with bulging eyes, a large nose with flaring nostrils, and a pronounced mouth accentuated with what appears to be facial hair and fangs. Perforation from top to the bottom, through which a rope is threaded to form a necklace. Size: Talisman itself measures 2-1/4" x 1" x 3/4" (5.7 x 2.5 x 1.9 cm), hangs 15" (38 cm) on rope.
