Indonesia, Borneo Island, Dayak, ca. early 20th century CE. A standing carved wood statue often referred to as a hampatong (also called a hempatong, tempatong, kepatong, or epatung) guardian figure or territory marker. The word Hampatong comes from the Dayak word patong which means statue. Most Hampatong figures portray ancestors and supernatural guardians from the Dayak religious system. Each one has its own specific meaning and purpose. This figure was carved in a characteristic abstract style with a rigid standing pose with boxy, angular shoulders, elongated arms that fall to the figure's knees, a nude torso revealing nipples and a belly button, and an ovoid head with minimalistically delineated facial features and a dramatic profile. Traces of white pigment remain on the form as well as a strand of cowrie shells wrapped around the waist. Affixed to square block stand. Size: 4.375" W x 13.125" H (11.1 cm x 33.3 cm)

Provenance: Adeon Gallery, Chicago, Illinois USA, acquired prior to 1970
