Description:

West Africa, Cote d'Ivoire, Baule, Yaure, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden mask depicting a human portrait visage surmounted by an adorable stylized monkey atop an integral rectangular plinth. This example displays traits characteristic of Yaure masks including an elongated face with a protruding mouth, semi-circular slit eyes set beneath a high forehead, a fanciful, elaborately incised coiffure, and groups of ritual scarification marks across the temples and brow, all presented in hues of yellow, white, red, and black. Yaure dancers traditionally don masks like this example at the Je celebration which is thought to purify a village following a death and also assists the soul of the deceased to arrive at its final resting place. Size: 7" W x 16.2" H (17.8 cm x 41.1 cm).
