Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Bali, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A playful, stunning Barong mask with a long beard made from coarse blonde horse hair. The mask itself is papier mache, with four boar tusks extending from its mouth, three more extending from its forehead, and painted gold foil in the form of flames from the top and sides of the head as well as decorating the large earrings and long fabric tongue that ornament the face. This Barong is a lion-like creature who is king of the spirits and leader of the hosts of the good in Balinese mythology. Size with beard: 12" W x 48" H (30.5 cm x 121.9 cm)
