Description:

Native American, Southwestern United States, Apache people, ca. early 20th century CE. An attractive example of a water basket woven from thick wicker strands. The utilitarian vessel is defined by a round but stable base, a spherical body with a sloped shoulder, a cylindrical neck surrounded by a thick rim, and two strap loops composed of four braided strands of horse-hair each. Both the interior and exterior surfaces are covered with sticky, dark-brown pitch to seal the countless gaps between the woven strands. The pitch acts as a barrier to mitigate and altogether halt any leakage of the liquid contained within. Size: 10.5" W x 13.2" H (26.7 cm x 33.5 cm)
