Description:

Native American, Southwestern United States, Apache people, ca. early 20th century CE. A finely woven basketry vessel of a sizable form. The utilitarian vessel presents with an acorn-shaped body, a narrow base, a sloped shoulder that tapers to a petite, flared mouth, and a pair of woven strap loops along the shoulder. Water baskets like this example were covered in thick, sticky pitch to seal the innumerable gaps between the woven strands to mitigate and altogether halt any leakage of the liquid contained within. Size: 9.6" W x 13.875" H (24.4 cm x 35.2 cm).

  • Condition: One strap loop split in middle, but both halves remain. Minor chipping to original pitch, and slight deformation to form of rim, otherwise intact and very good. Nice earthen deposits and great remains of original pitch throughout.
