Native American, Southwestern USA, Apache people, ca. early 20th century CE. A beautifully preserved example of a woven water basket, known as a "tus", with an elongated ovoid form, a small mouth, and two delicate vertical loop handles offset at the waist. The tightly woven surface is augmented with a coating of pitch over its exterior, forming a waterproof barrier so that this vessel could be carried to the nearest water source, filled, and brought back home without losing any of its precious cargo.
