Description:

North America, ca. early 20th century CE. A fine pair of snow shoes, with paddle-shaped frames formed from single elongated and bent wooden rods, meant for a child or a large anthropomorphic doll. Each shoe is painted with dark pigment, has two slender panels secured with wide tenons inside narrow mortises, and several loosely-woven strands of dried sinew that comprise the 'soles.' One shoe has an original leather foot strap still attached to the top side and demonstrates how one's foot would be secured within. The loose weaving of the sinew strands demonstrate how one could walk atop powdery snow without immediately falling through by increasing the surface area of each step. Size of each (both are relatively similar): 30.25" L x 8.75" W (76.8 cm x 22.2 cm).
