North America, Massachusetts, ca. 1910s CE. An antique woven raffia basket with a colorful band on the interior and butterflies on the interior sides, probably handmade by Sarah E. Belalen based on similar known examples. In Deerfield, Massachusetts, raffia basket makers formed a society known as the Pocumtuck Basket Makers, which oversaw the workmanship, form, color and designs of the baskets, and exhibited and sold their work under the auspices of the Deerfield Industries. Size: 6.8" in diameter x 1.35" H (17.3 cm x 3.4 cm)

Provenance: private Massachusetts, USA collection of Kahlil and Jean Gibran. Kahlil Gibran (1922-2008, also known as Kahlil George Gibran) was a successful mid-20th century Magic Realist painter and sculptor.
