Description:

West Africa, Nigeria, Yoruba peoples, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A fascinating carved-wood female figure, standing on an ovoid integral plinth with both arms falling to her sides. Nude for all but a tall pointed headdress and a belt, the finely sculpted female displays a slender torso and thick arms with elongated fingers and stout legs atop flat feet. Her bulbous breasts hang over a square navel and clearly delineated genitalia. Flanked by two sizable ears, her stylized visage is dominated by two massive, almond-shaped eyes with long upper eyelashes. Incised lines, perhaps representing face paint or scarification, adorn her face. Her backside features an incised back bone and voluminous posterior. Size: 2.875" W x 10.625" H (7.3 cm x 27 cm)
