Description:

**Originally Listed At $100**

West Africa, Nigeria, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A squat cast-bronze seated figure with an integral circular base. Its legs are wrapped around the bottom of the figure originating at the figure's back, and has a thick body, broad shoulders, and curved arms. The head displays ovoid eyes, a bulky nose, full lips, and a conical head terminating at a point. The figure would have had a dark, almost-black color upon casting, though heavy oxidation has imbued the exterior with colors of beige, light-brown, and dark-brown. This figure, resembling the deity Onile, the owner of the Earth, could have only been used or implemented by highly-esteemed Ogboni society elders. Size: 4.5" H (11.4 cm).

Provenance: ex-Nick Poolos collection, Adeon Gallery, Chicago, Illinois, USA acquired before 1970
