West Africa, Ivory Coast, Yaure (also Yaoure, Yohure) peoples, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. Finely carved from deep brown wood, this is an expressive face mask with intricate features and a massive headpiece projecting from the verso. The fine visage presents with slit-form eyes beneath arching brows, a crested nose above a semicircular mouth, and trios of scarification tabs from the temples and between the eyebrows. The elaborate coiffure boasts a densely incised triangular pattern within each curvilinear strand, and a pair of upturned ears flanks the openwork petaloid element above. Size: 7.625" W x 16.625" H (19.4 cm x 42.2 cm); 20.4" H (51.8 cm) on included custom stand.
