Description:

North or West Africa, Tuareg / French Touareg, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A sizable and spectacular tent mat, also known as an assaber or chetek, comprised of woven tan-colored vegetal fiber and dyed strips of leather in hues of green, red, and black. The lengthy rug features an intricate border along one of its longer sides, comprised of two bands, one of a zigzag motif and another of a diamond design, divided by multicolored horizontal striations. Abstract geometric patterns of stars, triangles, diamonds, hexagons, and zigzag lines adorn the body of the mat, while the other longer periphery displays nine slender stripes. Known for their durability, mats like this one serve a wide variety of purposes for the Tuareg of North Africa. The most prestigious of these mats are woven by the wives of religious leaders.
