Democratic Republic of the Congo, Songye, Lualaba River region, early 20th century CE. Worn in initiation ceremonies of the the Bwadi Bwa Kifwebe secret society. Fine example with meticulously carved linear incisions covering the wooden face, a square protruding mouth, and a linear nose set between two globular pierced eyes. Nicely painted white detail to contrast with dark hardwood. Kifwebe literally means "mask" in the Songye language. Size: 11" W x 21" H (27.9 cm x 53.3 cm)

Provenance: Ex-private Kragler collection, New Hampshire.
