West Africa, Nigeria, Idoma group, Okpoto peoples, ca. early 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden helmet mask depicting a bearded male with a white-painted face. The stylized visage presents with openwork ovoid eyes, a narrow nose with bulging nostrils, cupped ears, and a tall forehead with a slight central crest, and the coiffure is composed of several incised semicircles painted in dark brown pigment. Atop the head is a crown with a register of tubular protrusions beneath several projecting spikes on top. Lucite display block for photography purposes only. Size: 8.2" W x 17.5" H (20.8 cm x 44.4 cm)
