Central Africa, Democratic Republic of the Congo or Nigeria, Mfunte peoples, ca. early 20th century CE. A large forged-iron currency piece of a sizable form resembling either a corseted shield or an animal pelt. The diamond-shaped panel has a pair of concave grooves on the sides, a rounded top, a faint midrib, and a tapered tip. Currency pieces like this were used primarily during unusual or significant transactions due to their ornate and grand design. Size: 25.75" L x 9.675" W (65.4 cm x 24.6 cm)
