Description:

Africa, Tanzania, Makonde people, ca. first half of the 20th century CE. A finely-carved wooden anthropomorphic male figure standing atop wide-spread legs atop an integral circular plinth. His delineated arms, portly abdomen, and rounded chest define the upper body, with sloped shoulders rising gradually to a slightly-elongated head. Almond eyes and a smiling mouth surround a bulbous, triangular nose, with cupped ears on either side of the arched forehead, and a multi-lobed coiffure on top. A small fibrous stalk protrudes from the top of the head, and the entire figure is covered in a smooth brown patina. Comes with custom wooden display stand. Size: 8" H (20.3 cm); 9.625" H (24.4 cm) on included custom stand.
