Description:

Central Africa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kuba peoples, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A tall, hand-carved wood statue of a standing nude man, made to be a figure used in a masquerade. He stands on a round pedestal, carved as one piece with it, his stance wide and his flat feet carved with carefully delineated toes where they meet the base. His hands rest on his large stomach, above his dangling phallus. He has been carved with wide hips and a pronounced buttocks, with the artist careful to make him detailed from all sides. His head is roughly triangular, with a pointed chin and small features - closed eyes, a narrow, short nose, and a small, pursed mouth. His hair is depicted tight on his head, composed of cross-hatched lines. These figures are brought out as part of the masquerade ritual, where young men are initiated into the Kuba society. Size: 8.2" W x 27.5" H (20.8 cm x 69.8 cm)
