Western Africa, Nigeria, Igbo peoples, ca. early 20th century CE. A tall wooden shrine statue (or ikenga) depicting a helmeted male figure standing atop an included circular iron base. In Igbo society, the Ikenga is a ritual object that symbolizes masculine strength as well as the ability to achieve great things using one's own efforts. Most of these figures are simple, sometimes merely horns projecting from a wooden block, with the horns symbolizing the aggression of the male animal. This example is a much more elaborate figure with an elongated neck and a broad chest, with one arm holding a blocky club and the other a tall staff with an amusing chameleon on top. The fully realized body is three-dimensionally carved on all sides, with intricate facial features giving personality to the figure. This type of figure was made to be placed on or next to a personal altar. Size: 25.75" H (65.4 cm).

- Condition: One arm repaired with adhesive residue along break line. Age-commensurate surface wear, oxidation to iron base, several stable hairline fissures, small nicks and chips to limbs and head, small losses to feet and legs, otherwise very good.
