Description:

Western African, Ivory Coast, Ibibio peoples, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A wonderful hand-carved wood mask coated in mocha brown pigment and a lustrous burnished finish. The expressive visage displays a striking pair of annular, openwork eyes, an arched brow, a triangular nose, and full lips enveloping a set of protruding, incised teeth. Note the artist's careful attention to detail as demonstrated through the vizard's prominent cheekbones, recessed nasolabial folds, and the indentation at the center of the brow. A row of petite drill holes lines the periphery of the mask, allowing it to be strapped to one's face. Size: 5.75" W x 8.25" H (14.6 cm x 21 cm); 10.5" H (26.7 cm) on included custom stand.
