Description:

West Africa, Ivory Coast, Guro peoples, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. An interesting hand-carved wooden mask depicting an abstract anthropomorphic head on the front. The frontal face has a slender form with a narrow nose, protruding nubbin eyes, thin lips surrounding two rows of integral teeth, concentric striations across the forehead, and a pair of backswept horns. The face is attached to a hemispherical wooden backing with several peripheral perforations for attaching a larger costume, and the only sight hole is through the back of the mouth. The face is colored with smooth, dark-brown pigment, and nice patina has formed across the backing. A fine example from the Guro! Size: 7.25" W x 12.3" H (18.4 cm x 31.2 cm); 16" H (40.6 cm) on included custom stand.
