West Africa, Southern Mali, Dogon, ca. early 20th century. A finely carved, mask of a hogon of spiritual leader, rendered with a long, narrow visage with elegant facial contours indicating high cheekbones, a narrow pointed chin, and high forehead, with finely delineated details such as incised, long lashes extending from thick lids above openwork almond-shaped eyes, a long straight nose, wide, thin lipped open mouth, and pronounced ears, all with a rich, oil dark brown patina. Custom, museum-quality stand. Size: mask itself measures 6.25" W x 9.5" H (15.9 cm x 24.1 cm), 12.25" H (31.1 cm) with stand.
