West Africa, Ivory Coast, Baule, ca. early 20th century CE. A hand-carved and painted wood mask depicting an abstract buffalo head of a discoid shape with a highly stylized face, resembling a black and white target with red hues embellishing the three white circles (one on front flanked by one on each side) below a pair of curved horns painted black with a central white striation and red highlighted points. This mask, also known as a Bonu Amwin, is associated with the Goli festival which dates back to around 1900 and was created to celebrate new crops, periods of mourning, or visits from dignitaries. Size: 8.75" W x 16.125" H (22.2 cm x 41 cm)
