Description:

West Africa, Mali, Bamana peoples, ca. early 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden drum with an ovoid body, a central slit that leads to a hollow interior, dozens of incised striations that create a rasp-like instrument around the exterior, a conical lower handle, and an integral abstract anthropomorphic figure on top. Instruments like this are perhaps used during the Sogo Bo, puppet masquerades for which the Bamana people are most famous. Dark patina has developed along most surfaces. Size: 5.375" W x 29.25" H (13.7 cm x 74.3 cm); 31" H (78.7 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: ex-private St. Petersburg, Florida, USA collection, acquired in April 2017; ex-Artemis Gallery; ex-Adeon Gallery, Chicago, Illinois, USA, acquired prior to 1970
