Description:

West Africa, Mali, Malinke/Bamana peoples, ca. early-mid 20th century CE. A handsome, hand-carved door lock. It was originally a two-piece slide lock, now missing its slide bar. The main body is in the form of a stylized human figure depicted with a huge crested headdress or coiffure. Incised linear decorations on the body give the figure the appearance of tattooing or scarification. The figure is an abstract representation of an older woman, with long, hanging breasts and a round ball projecting from her torso perhaps indicative of a belly button or a pregnancy. She has legs but no arms. On the back, where the slide bar would have been, there are three very old iron nails. Her back, which would have been attached to whatever she locked, is undecorated. Size: 3.2" W x 13.25" H (8.1 cm x 33.7 cm); 16.3" H (41.4 cm) on included custom stand.
