Description:

Africa, from the far northern border of the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Central African Republic, Azande (Zande) people, early to mid 20th century CE. Hand-carved from a single piece of wood, a statue of a male villager - an ancestor who possessed the means to acquire a fancy European jacket and pants - standing with his long legs separated, arms at his sides with hands in pockets. He looks straight ahead with boldly carved features and a short coiffure. Quite a dapper figure. Size: 13.5" H (34.3 cm); 13.875" H (35.2 cm) on included custom stand.
