Description:

Native American, Southwest, Acoma, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A lovely pottery vessel presenting an attractive polychrome decorative program of characteristically stylized geometric and phytomorphic motifs in chocolate brown and deep orange on a white ground. The design itself is boldly painted on the white slip, almost like paint on canvas. Acoma potters would ultimately embrace horror vacui (literally, "the fear of empty space") in their designs, which was not only commercially successful - complexity equals value is a simple enough formula - but also aesthetically distinct from the work that preceded it, as evidenced in this beautiful vessel. Size: 7.25" in diameter x 5.25" H (18.4 cm x 13.3 cm)

Provenance: private S.S. collection, Los Angeles, California, USA
