Africa, Nigeria, Yoruba people, ca. early 20th century CE. A striking hand-carved wooden shrine figure. The figure represents a respected male, perhaps a diviner, who holds a large fruit or seed in one hand and a rattle with a thick handle in the other. His head is tilted to one side, with large, painted eyes, scarification marks on his cheeks and forehead, a short beard, and an elaborate, curved coiffure studded with nodules. Patches of deep blue pigment are found over his body, which has been painted a dark brown everywhere but the eyes. Standing Size: 6" L x 7" W x 23.8" H (15.2 cm x 17.8 cm x 60.5 cm)
