Southeast Asia, Thailand, ca. 1830 CE. An exquisite Bangkok Style (Ratanakosin) lacquer and gilt bronze Buddha standing with hands in Vitarka mudra of teaching and reason with palms facing outward, atop a traditional four-tiered, flame spiked throne. Red pigment embellishes the tops of the throne's tiers. This sculpture is a quintessential example of the Ratanakosin style Buddha with its sharp pointed spire atop the head, flame-like motifs emerging from the shoulders and ears of the crown, beautiful robe with a floral design, elaborately decorated pedestal, and of course the brilliant gold gilding and highlights of red lacquer. Look closely and you will also see small circular mirror glass inlays on the robe. Remarkable and seemingly never-ending details! Clearly this is a work of spiritual art that took hours upon hours to create! Size: 20-1/2" x 5-1/2" x 5" (52.1 x 14 x 12.7 cm)
The Ratanakosin style is the continuation of the Ayutthaya style that rose after the destruction of Ayutthaya in 1767. Wood became less important than it was in the Ayuttaya period, and bronze became the material of choice.
