North America, United States, New Mexico, Santa Rita del Cobre mining district, Spanish Colonial Period, ca. first half of the 19th century CE. A set of iron shackles used to bind the wrists or ankles of slaves intended to work in the mines of the Santa Rita del Cobre district. Two semicircular bands have looped terminals meant to accommodate a solid cross bar that was secured with a thick lock ring. An effective yet barbaric example of labor control in Spanish Colonial America. Size (cross bar): 13.75" L (34.9 cm); (shackles): 3.3" W x 3.3" H (8.4 cm x 8.4 cm)
