Description:

Eastern Europe, Russia, ca. early 19th century CE. A charming example of a triptych icon, made from brass and with four enameled panels. The first is the cover, which has a three-barred cross surrounded by Greek letters denoting Christ and other religious concepts. Open the inside to reveal three scenes. The two outer panels show saints while the central panel depicts Christ greeting an audience. Enamel in different shades of blue, ranging from cornflower to turquoise, fills in details and backgrounds for each of the scenes. Triptychs like this made excellent traveling icons because of their compact size. Size when fully opened: 6.5" W x 2.25" H (16.5 cm x 5.7 cm)
