Western Europe, Portugal, ca. early 19th century CE. A finely carved wood santo figure depicting Saint Francis of Assisi. The figure would have originally had arms made of ivory, which was a common sculptural material when it was made. The saint is depicted stepping forward on a simple pedestal. His face is well-worn from worship, and may have once had inlaid eyes, also made of ivory. He has a calm expression and looks forward at the viewer; his arms are raised and he may have once held some implements. His robes are simple, tied at the waist in the traditional Franciscan style with a rope with three knots representing poverty, chastity, and obedience. Saint Francis (ca. 1181 to 1226 CE) is one of the most beloved saints of the Catholic canon, the founder of the Franciscan Order, associated with kindness towards animals and the love of nature. - Condition: Head and nose have been reattached. Wood has fine age patina, with some smoothing to surface from touch, especially on the face. Ivory arms are missing.
