Description:

North America, Mexico, Early Republic Period, ca. early 19th century CE. A lovely forged-carbon-steel sword known as an "espada ancha" (literally "wide sword") with an iron hand guard, a stacked handle composed of three bull horn dowels with thin copper discs in-between, and a brass grip with a tiered pommel covering one side. The steel blade has a straight profile, a pointed tip, a trio of shallow grooves on each face, and sharpened edges on both sides. Espada ancha swords like this example used to have wide blades akin to the traditional broad sword during the pre-Republic era of New Spain (in modern-day northern Mexico), however the blade width narrowed over time to facilitate hunting and ease of transport by soldiers. Size: 4.375" W x 31.375" H (11.1 cm x 79.7 cm); length of blade: 26.5" L (67.3 cm).
