Description:

North America, Hawaiian Islands, ca. early 19th century CE. A beautiful example of a wooden calabash - a serving bowl named for a gourd shape, but made from hardwood, in this case koa wood. The bowl is deep, with a rounded base and steep walls that slope gently inward to a wide mouth with an unpronounced rim. Hawaiian royalty often valued specific calabashes - even going so far as to name them after royal individuals - and until the early 19th century they were reserved for elites in society. Size: 9.5" W x 6.2" H (24.1 cm x 15.7 cm)
