Description:

North America, Native American, Great Plains region, Plains Indians, ca. early 19th century CE. A "striking" war club with a long wooden handle, ovoid stone head, and leather wrappings all over. A rich brown patina covers the entire surface, and is a result of the applied resin coating used to attach the rawhide firmly to the head and provide a better grip on the handle. The thick lower portion of the handle would have allowed the user to securely grasp and swing the club, and the angled stone head meant it could be swung effectively with both forehand and backhand motions. Examples from this period are quite rare to find intact due to a myriad of external forces acting on the overall condition as well as the possibility of damage when used in battle. Size: 18" L x 4.25" W (45.7 cm x 10.8 cm).
