Description:

**First Time At Auction**

North America, United States, ca. first half of the 19th century CE. A fine example of a stretching last used by early American cordwainers (leather shoemakers). The two-part lacquered wooden last resembles a foot that can be expanded to form and stretch leather shoe blanks into the correct length and width. Both wooden components are operated by hinged iron bars with a rounded handle, an accordion spring, and a swinging bar to latch onto precisely shaped sizing notches. Size: 3" W x 10.625" H (7.6 cm x 27 cm); (fully closed): 9.625" L (24.4 cm); (fully open): 11.375" L (28.9 cm)
